A baby is the ultimate expression of love! Not just the love parents feel for each other, but most importantly the love they share for the innocent life they're privileged to bring into this world.

February is the month of love with cupids, hearts and chocolate kisses reminding you to celebrate the feelings of romance and infatuation. As many expectant mothers will know (particularly those enduring morning sickness), romance is not exactly a high priority, but the feelings of infatuation are truly magical.

From sharing the news after getting the positive test result, to hearing the heart beat for the first time, to feeling the gentle flutters as your tiny miracle makes his presence known, pregnancy is by far the most monumental time in a woman's life. A time, I feel, deserves to be documented.

I cherish my own maternity images. They remind me of my own feelings, hopes and expectations I had at those times. That's the beauty of photographs. Just like a song, or a scent, an image takes you back in time to the memories you have of a particular event, person or place. Long after you fit into your skinny jeans again (or like me, you've given up trying); long after the first separation anxiety; and long after first steps, words, and toothfairy visits, images of your beautiful belly will transport you back to where it all begun. You'll be reminded of the tiny kicks and hickups, the prenatal classes, the sleepless nights filled with anxiety and expectations. Memories of who you were while your child grew safely within you.

I am happy to introduce the "Mini Maternity Session" add-on to your newborn session. Quite often I get inquiries about "just a few" belly shots, from clients who are shy or private, but who truly wish to have a handful of keepsake images to remember their pregnancy by. This option is also perfect for women who have done a full session for their first baby, and would love to add to their memories with their second or subsequent child.

The Mini Maternity Session costs $100 and lasts 20-30 minutes. The 5-7 images from this session will be shown together with your newborn photos.

As an introductory bonus, you will receive a complimentary set of birth announcements, if you book your Newborn Session with the Mini Maternity Session add-on before February 29, 2012. At the end of the month, everyone who takes advantage of this special offer will be entered into a draw to win a free 10x20 mounted storyboard ($200 value) with images from their sessions. I occasionally get inquiries about photographing a baby that is already a few weeks old. I love babies of all ages, so I'm happy to do it, but I ensure that parents are aware that most of the images in my portfolio and on this blog are of babies that are 1-3 weeks old.

I simply cannot guarantee any specific shots or poses once baby is over 10 days old due to the fact that babies have a mind of their own. Just like you wouldn't expect a 6 month old to walk, it is unrealistic to expect that a two month old baby will sleep and curl like a baby that's just a few days old. That being said, every once in a while I will meet a baby that defies all my expectations.

Meet baby K. who came to see me at nearly 8 weeks old. As you can see he was happy to remember his younger days (hehehe). Please note that he truly is the exception to the rule. He was awake for the majority of his photos, but I simply had to share these.

I still highly recommend that you contact me BEFORE your little one arrives to ensure I have a spot for you right after you come home with your baby.

I love seeing my clients come back for their one year portraits, so spending the morning with her was a truly a pleasure. She's changed so much since I last saw her, but her lashes stayed as long as the day I first met her. Goodness gracious! When I heard that this little boy was 2 months old, I tried to convince his parents to wait until he's a few months older before doing the session. Luckily dad mentioned that they had just returned from the hospital. Turns out this little man was in a big hurry to see the world and arrived a few weeks early. I shuffled some things around in my schedule to fit them in asap. He was absolutely delightful! I cannot wait to see him again when he's 6 months old.

I've been blessed to photograph newborns from all over the Lower Mainland, including Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Coquitlam, White Rock, Delta, Anmore, Port Moody. It seems like babies came from all over the GVRD this year to capture their newborn photos. It has been an amazing year! I can only hope that 2012 brings as much joy and adventure :-)

Richmond Newborn Photographer - Ultimate Love

I was so excited when I got word that Mr. M. was born. We had a really fun maternity session with his parents and I was happy to hang out with them once again. Not only was their baby boy absolutely adorable, but at only a few days old, he was so sleepy! As is often the case when I have a very sleepy newborn, I went a little overboard and took quite a few more photos than necessary. This, of course, made it very hard to narrow down photos for the blog post so there are a few more photos than usual this time. Enjoy!

We also made sure to include their "other love" in one shot. I have a feeling little Mr. M. will learn how to throw a Frisbee before he learns how to talk ;-)

I hope you got to have a great time with your friends and family over the last few days! If Santa didn't get you quite what you wanted, did the stores on Boxing Day deliver? I had an amazing time doing absolutely nothing! It felt glorious :-)

It looks like I'm still a wee bit behind on keeping my blog updated, so I really want to blog these adorable kids in their Christmas get ups, before it becomes awkwardly too late, lol. Don't worry, I will be sharing their "proper" blog posts over the next few days.

As you can clearly tell, I only have one Christmas hat, hahaha. Actually it's not true, I have several, but this one is my favorite! I didn't even realize that I forgot to use any of the other ones. Oh well, there is always next year. How is that for planning ahead ;-)

I will be taking things easy over the next few days to prepare for the next wave of adorable newborns. January is nearly fully booked with only 2 spots available at the end of the month and February is filling up FAST! I have met so many wonderful families, shared birth stories with new and veteran moms alike, hugged and snuggled all the gorgeous babies I had the privilege to meet, and truly appreciated the gift of trust I received from each and every one of my clients this year. I'm not usually an emotional person, but at this time each year, as I look back at the year passed, I get a little teary eyed thinking about how incredibly lucky I am to do what I LOVE!

What a great and amazing busy time of year it has been! As I put in a few extra hours each week to ensure my wonderful clients get their beautiful keepsakes in time for the holidays, the poor blog, as usual, ended up getting neglected. This little cutie was in a big hurry to meet her mommy and daddy and decided to enter this world well before her due date. After spending several weeks in the NICU, her mommy was excited to bring her home and we arranged to capture her first portraits shortly after.

Her mommy warned me that this little girl does not like to sleep, but I didn't mind, it just meant more snuggles for me, and who could complain about snuggling a sweet baby girl :-)

Despite her efforts to not miss a single thing, she eventually found me boring enough to fall into a deep sleep, and I was able to capture sweet photos for her parents.

Newborn Photography - Addressing Safety

Today's post addresses an issue that is very important to me not only as a photographer who specializes in newborn and baby photography in the Vancouver area, but also as a mother of two beautiful girls.

See, there is nothing more precious and delicate than a brand new baby. My own daughter was born 7 weeks prematurely and entered this world weighing mere 4lbs 12oz. She was the tiniest little person I've ever met and she seemed so fragile to me. I admired the way her NICU nurses were confidently changing, dressing and bathing their tiny patients. I quickly learned that their confidence stemmed from having years of experience and understanding how to handle newborns safely and correctly.

Working with newborns is a privilege I am very grateful for. I take my job very seriously and I am honoured that parents trust me with their tiny babies the way I trusted the nurses who cared for my daughter. I have photographed over 100 newborns and babies in the last few years and I'm in awe of how unique each of my tiny clients is. Every baby has his/her own preferences and dictates how the session will go and what pose I can try. As much as I am willing to try a variety of set ups, if I feel that baby's safety would be compromised, I will insist upon safer alternatives.

With newborn photography growing in popularity, there are many new photographers entering the market. Personally, I think it's wonderful that parents nowadays have many choices and many different styles to choose from. I also understand that choosing the right photographer can be overwhelming, particularly since it can be difficult at times to distinguish between an experienced photographer who will safely handle and pose your baby and someone who might not put your baby's safety first.

One thing that is rarely talked about is the fact that many of the unique and whimsical photos are done as composites (2-5 images combined together to create a single image).

I am guilty of not disclosing this information, because I like to keep some of the "magic" hidden. That being said, I am aware of a growing number of photographers who attempt some of these shots without knowing how to do them safely.

If you are a parent looking for a photographer to capture some precious memories of your brand new bundle of joy, do some research and ask questions before you book.

A common trend emerging is for photographers to attend workshops on newborn posing. I think it's FANTASTIC that those photographers are eager to learn safe handling and posing techniques. Unfortunately, this is an unregulated industry and there are many workshops offered by self proclaimed specialists. Sadly, there are very few workshops where the photographers actually get to pose the babies under the careful supervision of an instructor. Instead, there are often several students in attendance, who simply get to watch while the baby is posed. The students are then allowed to take photos for their portfolios without having done any of the set up work or posing themselves. This can be particularly misleading to parents looking at a photographer's website. I cannot stress this enough, if you found someone whose work you love, ask them to show you samples from their most recent 3-5 session (or visit their blog) and ask them what measures they take to ensure your baby's safety during the photo shoot.

I get frequently asked if I offer workshops, mentoring, or classes on newborn photography and posing. I do not. If you're a photographer who is interested in safe posing techniques, contact me and I will gladly point you to some great resources. Keep it simple! There is nothing more beautiful than baby sleeping comfortably.

Learn the ins and outs of your photo editing software to create some fun images from time to time,

and most importantly, remember why you're doing this. To give families treasured keepsakes of their tiny miracle :-)

There is simply nothing more joyous than a bouncy, giggly baby girl filling her surroundings with squeals and laughter. She had me in stitches most of the session and I was sad to see her go. As my own girls are growing up, I sure miss the happy baby stage, where everything within reach seems like it's good enough to eat, and every corner needs to be explored, and every friendly face deserves a huge grin.

To me, baby smiles are like chocolate, but without the extra calories. When you're graced with one, it will lift your spirits and leave you happy for the rest of the day. Have a great day!

Two little girls means having fun with clothes and accessories! We had such a great time playing dress up and trying on different headbands and hats. I just fell in love with their gorgeous party dresses! So girly, so floaty, so heavenly; just what a little girl needs.

Today, I bring you a story filled with beauty, courage and a bit of devilish charm.

Once upon a time, there lived a happy, goodhearted pirate, who loved her life and the world around her.

She was famous for standing up to injustice and fighting hard for her beliefs. She was never afraid to help those who were less fortunate. Pirate Arrrtalie loved all the people around her, but most of all, she loved princess Belle, who was her best friend in the whole wide world.

Princess Belle was kind and gentle and cared very deeply for the people in her kingdom. She was as polite as she was beautiful, and she always said please and thank you! She was famous for anticipating people's wants and providing them with what they needed, be it hugs for the lonely, or a drink for the parched. She was so lovely that the devilish and charming menace from a neighbouring kingdom decided to steal her away.

When pirate Arrrtalie heard the news, she got angry; VERY ANGRY!

"I will not let him get away with this! No way!" she said. "I will rescue the princess and teach Captain Yarrr a lesson he won't soon forget."

Pirate Arrrtalie caught up with Captain Yarrr as he was about to disappear with the princess forever. She bravely fought the mean Captain until he had no choice but to release the princess.

Captain Yarrr tried hard to fight back, but he was simply no match for the strong and courageous young pirate. When it became obvious that he was going to loose, he pleaded for his life.

Pirate Arrrtalie laughed. She had no intention of killing the evil Captain. She had a much better idea.

"Off with your hat!" she yelled.

"No, not my prized possession!" cried the Captain. "I'll give you anything else, but please let me keep my hat!" But pirate Arrrtalie had her mind set.

"Off with your hat!" she repeated, "and never bother people in this kingdom again!"

Captain Yarrr ran away and princess Belle was returned home safely where she could once again grace everyone around her with her beauty and kindness.

And pirate Arrrtalie enjoyed her newest treasure. She was a pirate after all ;-)

I love it when I get a chance to photograph a brand new little one. This precious little girl was just 7 days old when her mommy and daddy came over for her portraits. She was so calm and so relaxed and absolutely perfect in every way!

And it certainly was no surprise that this little lady was totally gorgeous. Just look at her momma! She was positively glowing at her maternity session a few weeks ago.

I have to say, Vancouver sure has some stunning pregnant women and the sweetest little newborns. I'm sure lucky to be a photographer in this town :-)

This little girl's auntie traveled all the way from Japan to meet her and newborn portraits were a gift to Miss B.'s parents.

It was such a lovely session and I really enjoyed chatting with auntie about photography in general. She happens to be a photographer in Japan and was curious how we do things here in Canada. Apparently newborn photography is not as big in Japan as it is here. After seeing how much time and patience goes into it, though, she said she'll have to think about it some more, lol. Truth be told, I am generally not a very patient person at all! It's the marvelous little beings that seem to put a calming spell on me. I guess that's why I just adore working with babies. They bring balance to my life; they're the yin to my yang :-)

Miss A. was a month old when she came to see me, but she slept like a newborn just barely a few days old. I think we finished in record time and got to do so many different set ups!

Her lashes, her smile, her gorgeous hair; I was smitten the moment I saw her :-) An the best part is, I will get to see her again in a few months for her 6 month portraits since she's one of my "Watch Me Grow" babies.

After sharing a confined space for several months, these little two were happy to have some space to themselves. Whether she kicked him a few too many times, or he told too many knock-knock jokes, I don't know, but one thing was certain, they did not like to share the spotlight :-). Individually, they cooperated beautifully, but put them together and they were not having it. At 6 weeks old, sessions are challenging, with twins, mom had to work twice as hard at comforting them. That said, all the effort was worth it!

Christmas may still be a couple of months away, but it will be here before you know it and it's time to start planning your holiday cards.

For the first time ever, Mamique Photography will be holding a day of mini sessions on October 29th this year. The sessions will be short and sweet (15-20 minutes) in the gorgeous fall colours mother nature has set up for us :-) Should mother nature decide to rain on our parade, the day will be moved to November 5th (and we'll do the photos in the studio should it rain that day, also).

The session fee of $200 will include the following:

1 8x10 print
set of 24 5x7 Christmas cards with envelopes

Additional card sets are $50 per set, and additional products/prints can be purchased at 10% off the a la carte pricing. Digital files are not included but can be purchased separately.

I met this lovely family in August when they came for their maternity photos. Even before his tiny sister was born, it was obvious that this handsome young man was going to be the most loving and caring big brother a little girl could ever ask for!

Fast forward a few weeks, and he proudly showed off his baby sister and carefully posed for photos with her. They were such gorgeous and relaxed kids! Truly a dream to work with and such a pleasure for me to capture these precious moments for mom and dad :-)

It's hard to believe it's been a year already! Miss T. was full of smiles as a newborn, but was a bit more shy this time around :-) I love how curious babies are at this age! She'd walk over (yes walk!) to see what I was doing and was very interested in the camera, the reflector, the extra lenses. I think she might be planning her future studio already ;-)

It was such a wonderful session and getting a chance to catch up with mom and dad was lovely. The best part for me, though, was at the very end of the session when she just came up to me and gave me a super long hug. It totally caught me off guard and made me tear up! What a sweetheart :-)

I'm so excited I get to watch as this sweet baby girl grows and changes over the next year. She's one of my "Watch Me Grow" babies and I couldn't be more thrilled.

She was super tiny and all of my props looked so huge on her, but she was oh so cute! I thought it was so adorable how she was perfectly happy to try some of the more complicated poses, but as soon as I'd try something simple, she'd wiggle until I'd give up :-) That's what I love about photographing newborns; even at just a few days old, I get a glimpse into their personalities. So often when they come back for their 6 month or 1 year portraits, their little personalities shine through. I love it!

I can't believe it's been two years since the last time I got to work with twins and I forgot what an amazing experience it is. See, it's not just about showcasing their individuality. The thrill comes in capturing their special bond.

Preparing for their session, I was overwhelmed with ideas. I was sad that I would be able to realize only a handful of them. Even with the 3-4 hours I set aside for newborn sessions, getting two babies settled and happy at the same time takes time. I got lucky though, as these two ladies were very happy to sleep through pretty much anything.

Lazy Blogger Alert!

Well, not so much lazy as my kids were on summer break and I had to navigate my work schedule around them :-) Blogging ended up on the bottom of a very long list, but I'm happy to report that school is back in session and I will actually be able to complete some very important tasks! My youngest started Kindergarten this year (yikes!) so there will be a few more days of a very gradual entry, but starting next week both of them will be in school full time and I will have no more excuses ;-). I will be missing summer, though.

I've been photographing this gorgeous girl since she was a tiny and feisty little newborn :-). Each time I saw her she was full of personality and a clear view of exactly what she wants! Her one year portraits were a blast, but boy, that girl can move FAST! She loved being on the move and having learned how to walk, she thought we were crazy asking her to sit down. There is just too much of the world to see to be sitting still. When she finally did sit down, she made sure I knew exactly how she felt about it, lol. It's always a pleasure seeing you guys. I've met his mommy and daddy way back in March. The doctors were worried he would come really early, so we opted to do the maternity session earlier than usual, just so we wouldn't miss it. And then we waited, and waited....

Turns out he wasn't in such a big hurry after all and waited until he was full term :-) And secretly I'm super glad he waited, because I had just picked up my latest prop only a couple of days prior to his session. He apparently loved it, because he got himself all comfy on it and then stayed asleep for the remainder of the session going through pose after pose without so much as a peep :-) He was definitely worth the wait!

My favorite time of year is here! I was beginning to think that we'll go directly from wet Spring to wet Fall this year and skip Summer altogether. I live for warmth, which is why I'm in my element during a newborn session where the thermostat is set to "tropical", lol.

I rarely take my camera out for personal projects anymore. I guess, when I'm working all the time, I want to spend my free time with my family. Plus they groan every time they see a camera pointed at them so I try not to subject them to too much of it. I must have been the only parent this year at the various school outings, sports days, etc that was there to enjoy the moment rather than record it for posterity. It's actually quite amusing to watch all the parents frantically snapping away, blinding their kids with flashes. Perhaps I just don't get it. Event photography is not really my thing.

With all that said, every once in a while I simply cannot resist capturing just a few photos, and sometimes they oblige. When they're busy at school/work, seeing their smiley faces really brightens my day. I just love them so much!

Vancouver Portrait Photographer - Clothing tips

"What should we wear?" is a question that gets asked frequently by my clients. And rightfully so. Clothes are an important part of the final product. They can either enhance your portrait or steal the show, or worse, they can make it look like a snapshot. Here is a quick comparison:

Sure, my daughter is cute, but admit it, you're trying to figure out what exactly is on her shirt, right? Now look at this handsome little man. His stare is captivating and I bet you didn't notice much else.

Here is a list of questions to ask about each clothing item you're considering:

Is it faded?
Has it lost its shape?
Is it pilling?
Is it wrinkled?
Does is have distracting patterns or wording?
Does it look old?

If you answered yes to any of them, don't bring it! You don't have to buy brand new outfits for your session, but one or two new pieces added to your best clothes can really pull things together and make you and your family look like a million bucks. Check out Frogs Hollow Children's Boutique for some great clothing ideas for your kids.

Now let's move onto the daunting task of coordinating your outfits. Let's face it, is a tough job. There is a reason why the industry of stylists, personal shoppers and shows about what not to wear is booming. The thing I see most often is clients giving up and everyone ends up wearing either white dress shirts or black t-shirts. There is nothing wrong with that, but here is how we can make it better.

If you want to go with the white dress shirt concept, why not have another person wear a cream sweater, and someone else a pastel coloured shirt. How about some ruffle or lace trim on a tanktop layered with a light coloured cardigan? By adding different textures and keeping the colours in white, cream and light pastels, you'll add dimension to your portraits and avoid having everyone blend into a big white blob :-)

Same idea with black. Try a dark grey t-shirt or sweater. Or perhaps navy or chocolate brown. Keeping all the colours darker will unify the clothing, yet give each person their idividual look.

Below is a clothing sample in my personal favourite colour pallete of mauve, brown and creme to give you an idea of a more stylized look. It's important to have each person coordinate with every one else, eg. dad with son, siblings together, mom and daughter, etc.

Little Mr. K came to see me a few days ago and although he was WAY past the ideal newborn age for photographs (5-14 days), I made sure to give his mommy and daddy images they will be able to cherish for years to come. You will find that most photographers who specialize in newborns will refuse to accept clients past the ideal age, simply because it takes hard work and dedication to capture the precious sleepy poses. K's mommy found my weakness; flattery, thus I simply couldn't say no, lol. Let me assure you, we worked very hard that day and K. was much more relaxed than most babies his age :-) If you're wanting newborn photos, I would still recommend you get them done before your baby is 2 weeks old, because there are no guarantees your baby will be willing to succumb to my tricks ;-)

Sweet little Miss A. was a bit older than the newborns I typically photograph (almost 4 weeks) and at that age you never know how the session will go. Turns out she was perfectly happy to doze off and pose perfectly for her first set of portraits :-)

I'm excited I'll get to see her again in a few months for her 6 month portraits and one more time when she turns one. It's part of the new "Watch Me Grow" package for 2011. It was two nights before Christmas, and all through the house, lots of creatures were stirring, probably even a mouse..... :-)

We had a lovely Christmas get together with my husband's childhood friends. Between the 4 families, we had 9 kids between the ages of 2 and 7 and another one on the way. Today's little guy LOVED to eat, lol. Sleeping, not so much :-) That's okay, though, since he was pretty happy to just lounge and check things out. And no baby can resist the powers of the Peanut Wrap, even if it's just for a few minutes.

Sweet little M. was such a cuddler! He loved being held and though he really liked to sleep, he didn't particularly like to do it without being held. It was a bit more tricky to get the shots I wanted, but I have to admit, I really loved that I got to snuggle him so much. And the smiles he gave me made all the efforts totally worthwhile :-) It was hard to give him back to his parents when the session was done. It was so lovely seeing you guys again. Enjoy your little cuddlebug!

Just a little over a week before Christmas is here, but before I can get ready for Santa, there are still a few more sessions to go. Yesterday, I had a sweet mommy-to-be in my studio and she brought along her mommy, because daddy-to-be couldn't get away from work. Seeing them together made me really miss my mom. She's all the way in Winnipeg and I really don't get to see her as much as I'd like.

Baby M. is due in just over 3 weeks so I'm excited to see them again very soon. Have a great Christmas and enjoy your sneak peek :-)

I got to photograph another gorgeous belly today! I always have such a wonderful time getting to know my clients and watching their faces light up as they talk about their baby. This lovely momma is anxious to meet her baby girl who is due in the new year. I just love the name they have chosen! But I won't spoil the surprise ;-)

As soon as I saw the delicate pink lace and ruffles, together with the delicate porcelain skin, visions of Jane Austin's world came flooding in. How shocking would maternity imagery like this have been back in those days! I'm so glad we live in a time where a woman's body, and especially the curves of an expectant mother-to-be, are celebrated :-)

I had the pleasure of photographing a gorgeous baby boy today. He was absolutely delightful and slept surprisingly well at 13 days old! I was a bit worried, since usually after day 8 they're a bit more alert, but he was quite happy to sleep and be posed :-) And my heart melted when he gave me a huge grin! Thank you baby G. for being such a sweetheart.

Little Miss K. made me work hard today, but I'm not complaining because it meant I got to have lots of cuddles with her :-) At 13 days old she wanted to be part of the action and protested loudly when we tried to get her to sleep. Of course, I'm not one to give up easily, so with enough time and effort she drifted off and let me get the shots I wanted. Asleep or awake, she sure was cute as a button!

Soon those tiny ballerina shoes will grace the feet of a brand new baby girl. Sure, they'll seem huge at first, but before you know it she'll be standing and walking and dancing to her heart's content. The footprints our children leave on our souls are forever lasting and precious :-)

Darling baby M. was such a dainty little lady :-) Everything about her was sweet and delicate. It took us a little while to get started but once we did, she was fabulous! Given how close to Christmas we are, I asked if we should do a Christmas themed set up and you should have seen daddy's face light up! That little girl has her daddy wrapped around her tiny fingers and I think there is nothing sweeter than a daddy completely smitten with his baby girl :-)

Now don't let that cute smile fool you, lol. It wasn't all fun and games. We got some protests, too! Poor munchkin has very delicate skin and her sweet little bum was very sore from diaper rash, so I had to be extra careful when handling her to ensure I didn't cause her discomfort. Broke my heart to see her sad little face :-(

There was a blanket of fluffy white snow covering the Lower Mainland today and I thought for sure we would have to cancel today's session. I was looking forward to meeting little Miss M. as she arrived a couple weeks ago and was getting bigger every day.

I was so happy when the door bell rang and they were here despite the snow! Miss M. was a doll and was happy to let me do my thing. She slept like an angel and only woke up when she needed to fill up her belly. Did I mention that I love my job? :-)

And check out her lashes! So unbelievably long!

....cherub. C is for cute. C is for oh so deliciously chubby and delightfully calm! Little Mr. C. was a total dream to photograph. And he made the sweetest little sounds as he slept; and he slept so well! I could have spent all day with him :-)
