"Unlimited personal reproduction rights"... wow, that's a mouthful, isn't it?
That's why photographers just say "digital files" for short. But I think over the years consumers started to forget the true meaning of digital files. Digital files are what negatives were back in film days. Back then, photographers rarely sold negatives, and if they did, they would charge a premium for those negatives. Why? Because they understood they were selling unlimited personal reproduction rights. The client understood that, too!
Now, I get it, we live in a digital world so you may not like the film comparison. But what is the actual reason you wish to purchase ALL of the digital files (negatives)? Do you truly want to print them all, in various formats and sizes? Or do you just want to HAVE them all, but they will forever live on your hard drive, and some will be posted on Instagram or Facebook?
I love sharing photos online, and I know many of my clients do, too. And not everyone's budget allows them to purchase the unlimited personal reproduction rights (aka digital files). For that reason, beginning in 2014, I have started offering a watermarked web resolution file (perfectly sized for online sharing, but will not print) for every image that is purchased in print. That way, you get the best of both worlds; all your ordered photos to share with friends and family asap, and beautiful professionally produced products custom designed just for you. Because let's face it, with a brand new baby, when exactly will you find the time to print that album, or canvas?
